Flying Fox Tavern

Black and white logo of Flying Fox Tavern.

The Flying Fox Tavern is the main haunt for New York’s horror lovers looking for elevated pub food and drinks. Blending the concept of Horror and Old English pub I developed the branding for the bar reflected in print (menus) and physical space (wallpaper and signage) ensuring the horror theme is present in all areas of the tavern. I also created design elements used in  merchandise (swag) which allows the brand to extend into a secondary revenue stream.

The brief for the logo: include a ‘flying fox’ (a kind bat) central in the design and maintain the feel of a traditional tavern.

My idea was to design/draw a bat that was both inviting yet keeping within the constrains of the horror theme, creating a wider audience appeal. The end result utilizes the structure of traditional tavern signage, classic horror elements and modern typography for readability and standalone aesthetics.

For a classic feel, I chose a minimal color palette with standout typography. As the tavern is dark, too many colors would go unnoticed.

Here are some icons and reusable elements I created for design and merchandise. Several icons were created to correspond with signature drinks such as “Dracula” or “Vampira.” improving scannability for customers in low-light environments.  The icons were drawn in Procreate and refined in Illustrator.
